You can add a backup email address or phone number as security information to your account. We send a verification code to your backup email address or phone number if you forget your password or someone else tries to access your account. Manage your security info – Microsoft account security
You may update your information, reset your password, or review previous activity. You’ll notice a popup if you’re not already logged into your Microsoft account.
You may add, update, or remove security information on the account page under Security fundamentals. To learn how to choose one of the options below.
Add or update security info
Go to How to add security details to your Microsoft account to learn how to add a new email address or phone number. Verify that the list of phone numbers or email addresses you use to access your account is current. Open your sign-in settings to disable sign-in preferences for any phone number or email you don’t frequently use.
Remove Security Info – Microsoft account security
Important: If there is no risk to the account’s security, you do not need to erase outdated security information (e.g. someone else has access to your old mailbox). Be careful to add new information first if you need to change your security information.The information doesn’t truly change for 30 days if you ask to have all security information removed from your account.
We cannot accept more additions or modifications to security settings or billing information. You may continue to use your devices, email, Skype, and OneDrive as usual because your account is still open and active. When it’s time to enter updated security information, we’ll notify you.
Troubleshooting verification code issues – Microsoft account security
I’m not getting my verification code. What do I do?
There are several reasons why verification codes might not always receive. Check whether any of the most typical causes on the list apply to you after reading it.
Does your phone block texts from unknown numbers?
If so, pick I don’t have a code after changing your phone’s settings. We’ll email you another code for verification.
Did your email send your verification code to your junk folder?
Use the code supplied to you after looking in your junk email bin for a message from a Microsoft account. Valid verification codes originate from email addresses that begin with @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
Create a trusted sender list for @accountprotection.microsoft.com so that you may get your verification code in your mailbox.
Is your phone number or email address entered correctly?
We only display the last two digits of your phone number or the first two characters of your email address when you sign in to protect the security of your data.
Verify your security information is accurate by:

- Choose one of these options to replace your security information, or pick a strategy that you are confident will work.
Your secondary email address should not be @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com.
If so, you are attempting to validate a different Microsoft account using a different Microsoft account. It may be challenging to remember which one you are logged in to. Most browsers immediately sign you out of the first account (the one requesting the code) when you sign in to the second account (to have the code delivered to that email).
Find your verification code here:
- Sign in with the primary account while your browser is in private mode. You may do this to continue to be logged into both versions simultaneously.
- Keep the browser window open when asked to input the verification code provided to your alternative email address.
- Please open a new window and set it to private. In Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, the shortcut for InPrivate Browsing is Ctrl + Shift + P. For information about privacy mode in a different browser, consult that browser’s help section.
- Sign in to a different email account in the new window and search for the message from the Microsoft account team there. The message’s verification code should be copied or noted down.
- Go back to the window where a verification code is being requested. Enter the code and then adhere to the directions.
A message told me to “make sure you can receive a security code”
Verify or add additional security information when you get a notification asking you to confirm that you can receive a verification code. You can bypass it for up to 24 hours. Still, seven days after the initial alert, you’ll need to validate your security information or enter new security information to sign in again.
We won’t ask you to confirm your security information every time you sign in.We might ask you to verify it again—for instance, if it has been a while since you logged in. This is how we make sure your information is up to date.
Is a verification code the same thing as a password?
No.
It is not possible to use a verification code in the password field since it does not serve as a replacement for your password. If your password is compromised, we also employ verification codes as an additional layer of security.
